Three women fight back against a soldier with everything they have, one raising a sword, another grappling from behind, a third figure pinned beneath them in the struggle. Goya captured this moment of raw civilian resistance in an etching and aquatint made in Spain around 1810 to 1820, part of his Disasters of War series. He kept these prints hidden, and they were not published until 1863, more than thirty years after his death, because he knew they were too dangerous to release in his lifetime.
