On May 11, 1801, he watched the celebrated matador Pepe Illo get fatally gored in the Madrid bullring, and fifteen years later he turned that memory into this engraving. A massive dark bull looms over Illo's limp body on pale sand while another fighter rushes in too late. From his series La Tauromaquia, this print is not spectacle, it is eyewitness testimony translated into line and shadow.
