From the Cleveland Museum of Art record

Édouard Baldus photographed the side of the famed cathedral to capture the volume of the structure. Visible from this angle are two workshops for the church’s restoration, some of the construction materials, and scaffolding on three of its flying buttresses (architectural structures that form an arch with the wall they support). One of the major monuments of Paris, the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris was built in the 1100s, renovated in the 1700s, and in need of restoration by the 1800s.
