Those painters sometimes turned to photographs as models for the figures in those paintings. Another print of this photograph and several other images of the same girl were owned by the novelist Victor Hugo, a champion of the working classes. Edmond Bacot took them while visiting Hugo. While Impressionist painters were depicting women outdoors in gardens and parks, scenes of rural labor were popular subjects for many other painters.
