The power of this daguerreotype comes from the way the photographer has grouped the figures--perhaps three sisters, or a mother with her two daughters. He has carefully orchestrated the rhythm of their hands, the multiple directions of their glances, and their stances. Moreover, their strikingly different hairstyles also raise the question of whether the photographer had a hand in creating their distinctive coiffures.
