Attributes identifying women's work were less varied and less often used than those for men, since most women in the mid-1800s did not work outside of the home. Age and experience are etched in the face of this older, bonneted woman who sits in a three-quarter, head-and-shoulders pose for the camera. This daguerreotype is a vivid likeness of its sitter, whose strong features are accentuated by the soft, even lighting.
