The models for this Cupid and the figure of a Nymph (see 2022.32.2) were designed by Étienne -Maurice Falconet (1716-1791), director of sculpture at the Sèvres Manufactory from 1757 to 1766. The bases of the pair have two corresponding inscriptions by Voltaire. On Cupid, the phrase translates as: “Whoever you are, here is your master. He is, was, or ought to be.” The Nymph’s inscription responds with, “No, you are not my master, nor have been, nor should be.” Unglazed figures such as these, known as biscuit porcelain, were very popular due in part their likeness to marble.
