In this scene of the Crucifixion, Jesus hangs on the cross, flanked by his mother and Saint John the Evangelist. With subdued gestures, these witnesses look towards Jesus, whose closed eyes and greenish pallor suggest that he has already died. The illuminator emphasized the importance of Christ's sacrifice by painting a gold rather than a wood cross and by treating the background abstractly, establishing a serene and timeless tone.
