Attic Black-Figure Amphora

On the front is the wedding procession of Alcestis and Admetos. The couple stands in a quadriga, Admetos in a chiton and mantle holding the reins, Alcestis veiled in a dress decorated with incised squares enclosing circles. Behind them is a female figure in a patterned dress with a mantle over her left shoulder. Behind the horses stands Apollo, holding a kithara. Facing him is Artemis, wearing a patterned dress and polos. Two female figures stand before the horses, facing the bride and groom. They may be Demeter and Persephone, or perhaps Aphrodite and Semele. Behind the pair stands Dionysos, accompanied by a boy attendant. On the reverse is a quadriga, centered and frontal. The heads of the driver and passenger both look left. Two pairs of figures facing inward flank the quadriga. At the left stands a female figure and a youthful male figure. To the right is a female figure with a boy attendant. The figures of Alcestis and Admetos are inscribed. The neck is decorated with an addorsed lotus-palmette frieze. The lower body has three zones of decoration below the figural zone. At the top, a lotus chain, below which is a simple meander to left. At the bottom, a zone of ascending rays. Tongues, alternating black and red, decorate the top border of the figural zone.
