One hundred and eleven leaves survive from this Gospel lectionary, which is now kept in an unbound state for conservation reasons. A priest would have used a lectionary at Mass for the Gospel reading of the day. This manuscript is related to a group of works produced at the court of Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor from 800 to 814. Charlemagne sought to revive and restore the glories of ancient Rome, including the tradition of producing extravagant and costly manuscripts such as this one.
