A wide promenade separates the building from the river where a number of boats and "sampans," or small, covered boats, can be seen. Several rickshaw runners and their rickshaws are sitting on the side of the promenade on the lower right area of the image. This view looks northward toward Shanghai's first Public Garden, now Huangpu Park, with its guard post visible in the distance.
