Marie Rapp was Alfred Stieglitz's part-time secretary at his 291 Gallery and his closest confidante between his marriages. Their mutual affection is evident in this sympathetic portrait; Stieglitz represented Rapp with a gentle grace and beauty, and she returned the favor, presenting herself openly and serenely. An out-of-focus background of muted grays and whites frames Rapp in light abstractions and subtle angles, while her richly dark hat, coat, and muff dramatically set off her delicate features, focusing attention on her face.
