This tightly cropped composition offers a peek through an arch into the brilliantly lit interior of the Colosseum in Rome. Schellinks's broad handling of brown wash, combined with his selective use of the reserve of the paper, create beautiful effects of light and shade. The application of darker wash atop the surrounding arches imparts a sense of volume and suggests the vaulted corridors that tunnel away from the interior. The angular bare branches, seen in the lower left part of the drawing, are a typical motif Schellinks included in his later drawings. Based on a sketch he made in Rome, this sheet was most likely drawn after his return to Amsterdam in 1665. It is an independent work of art made to be sold on the open market.
