Portrait of Anna Jadwiga Zamoyska

This beautiful, large-scale portrait shows Anna Jadwiga Zamoyska, a Polish aristocrat at the age of nineteen. She is depicted with delicate features and large, expressive eyes. Her hair is curled in a manner fashionable at the time, yet she is dressed in a classical costume rather than in a contemporary garment. This drawing was made by Angelica Kauffman in 1791 ––at the height of her Roman career–– in preparation for a family portrait that was commissioned by Anna Jadwiga’s father, count Andrzej Zamoysk, during the family’s extended visit to Italy. Typical of Kauffman’s practice in the 1790s, she used black chalk on gray prepared paper to record the likeness of the young woman. The finished painting was lost in WWII, but Kauffman’s compositional oil sketch at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and a copy by Józef Buchbinder in the former seat of the family in Kozłówce have survived. The composition showed Anna Jadwiga standing next to her father in an antique costume identical to that in our drawing, although in the painting her hair is dressed with flowers rather than a simple silk ribbon.Despite being almost identical in size and format, there is no evidence that Kauffman used the present drawing as a cartoon for transfer to the canvas of the oil version.
