Using strokes of black chalk, Adriaen van Ostade portrayed a musician wearing a large cloak, loose pants, and sagging hat, with his back to the viewer. The performer rests his violin on his right shoulder while his left hand controls the bow. Van Ostade first lightly sketched the figure and then reinforced the design with darker, thicker strokes of chalk to clarify details around the cloak, head, and feet. Completed as a study for an etching, the artist accounted for the mirroring of the figure in the final print by reversing the violinist's hold on his instrument, which is typically positioned on the left shoulder.
