Related to the play Sugawara denju tenarai kagami 菅原伝授手習鑑 (Sugawara's Secrets of Calligraphy), performed at the Nakamura Theatre, 1832, 5th month. This is an aizuri-e (blue print) fan print, which shows the actor Bando Mitsugorō IV (1802–1863) as Kan Shōjō in the play Sugawara denju tenarai kagami ( Sugawara’s Secrets of Calligraphy ), performed in 1832. This portrait depicts the scene in which Kan Shōjō has climbed Mount Tenpai and, in a rage, transforms himself into a demon surrounded by red lightning. Japan, Asia
