The youthful monk Ananda is sculpted here with a slightly inclined head and abdomen. The visual impact of the white marble was originally enhanced by colored pigment and gilt paint. Both the white marble and style of sculpture identify the statue as being a product of Quyang, an area of northeastern China famous for its sculpture. Asia
