This woodcut title page opens one of the most ambitious artist-produced books in European history. Albrecht Dürer printed and distributed his Apocalypse series himself, a radical move for 1498, and reissued it in 1511 partly to fight back against widespread copying of his work. The page displays bold Gothic lettering reading "Apocalipsis Cu Figuris," with Saint John seated below alongside his eagle, witnessing the crowned Woman of the Apocalypse standing on a crescent moon. It is a declaration of authorship as much as a work of art.
