In 1670s Netherlands, fashionable men wore something called rhinegraves, breeches so full and heavily decorated they practically consumed the wearer. Romeyn de Hooghe captured this theatrical extreme in his etching series Figures à la Mode, showing a single man draped in an enormous cloak, cascading lace collar, long curling hair, and a fringed apron of braids over his breeches. These prints circulated across Europe, spreading and quietly satirizing the most extravagant trends of the era.

From the middle of the 17th century fashionable men wore ‘rhinegraves’, extremely full breeches decorated with an ‘apron’ of braids under long fitted coats. The long curly hair, high-heeled shoes, large bands and profusion of buttons and bows amazed many contemporaries. The men in this series by De Hooghe almost seem to succumb to their garments.
