From the Rijksmuseum record
The sisters Emily and Laura Ann Calmady – five and three years old – posed for Lawrence several times in his studio between July 1823 and March 1824. Lawrence himself considered this portrait of the two girls one of his best works. It was generally favourably reviewed in the press, although a critical voice was raised regarding the affected, rather awkward pose of the younger girl, Laura Ann.
