This is the only known impression of the second state of this etching depicting Auguste Manet, a high official in the Ministry of Justice and subsequently a judge and court counselor. It is Manet's second etched portrait of his father. Both versions are based on the double portrait he painted of his parent in 1860, now in the Musee du Louvre, Paris.
