Duplessi-Bertaux was a pupil of Joseph Marie Vien, an artist who made a number of engravings documenting the French Revolution and the travels of the Due de Choiseul. Levachez and his son were engravers, as well as successful merchants, who knew the taste of their public well. Duplessi-Bertaux and Vernet furnished many of their subjects.
