Little is known about the Monogrammist P. P., who was active at the turn of the 16th century in Northern Italy, possibly in Ferrara. His prints are often idiosyncratic in style as well as subject matter. In this work, sleepy gatherers display the astrological influence of the moon on human destinies in their erratic, even lunatic behavior. The Christlike figure on a pedestal in the center holds aloft a torch and crescent moon as his companions kneel, either to him or to the heavenly light he presents.
