Technical developments in printmaking techniques allowed artists to reproduce the tonal complexities of painted compositions. In this woodcut after a design by Titian, the cutter accomplished a lively sense of differentiated surfaces through the use of graphic patterns. The dynamic lines of the landscape serve to heighten Francis’s gesture of religious rapture.
