Beneath this print, Goya scratched the words "Fuerte cosa es," meaning "That's tough," and the sarcasm still cuts more than two centuries later. In this etching and aquatint from around 1810 to 1820, a soldier raises a weapon over a crouching, helpless figure while bound victims press against a dark tangle of trees, the heavy aquatint shadow making the scene feel almost suffocating. Goya considered these images too brutal to publish, and they were not released until 1863, thirty-five years after his death.
