Orphaned as a child, Anna was sent to Burgerweeshuis (Citizen's Orphange) where she created this sampler. She embroidered not only her own name, Anna Wakker, but also the names of her parents, Everhard Marinus Wakker and Catharina Ronde. The orphans often embroidered the initials of relatives on their samplers.
