Pinning the Hat was a favorite subject for Auguste Renoir, and several versions exist including an 1893 painting and later variations in pastel, etching, and lithography. Renoir's models were Julie Morisot (daughter of Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot [1841-1895]) and her cousin. To produce the range of colors in this print, Renoir worked with the master printer Auguste Clot. The artist drew a design on a lithographic stone and then colored a proof impression as guidance for Clot, who then printed each tone separately. Auguste Clot, the master printer of this lithograph, worked with many of the artists of Auguste Renoir's time, including Edgar Degas and Pierre Bonnard.
