A Swiss etcher and draftsman primarily active in Germany, Adrian Zingg was esteemed as one of the most important landscapists of his generation. This Arcadian view—a technical marvel combining line etching with delicate washes of brown—is a superb example of the German Romantic landscape in which contemplative, idealized figures meditate and converse in a meticulously rendered wooded grove. It is thought that Zingg executed the etching and members of his workshop completed the hand coloring, following one of Zingg’s drawings.
