This Yohei III dining bowl with an everted rim has a glaze identified in its box lid inscription as hisoku (C. mise ), or “mysterious color.” This name typically refers specifically to a type of high-quality, green-glazed ceramic produced in the ninth and tenth centuries at the Yue kilns in China’s Zhejiang Province as tribute ware for the imperial family. Many ceramics created by the Seifū Studio refer to and emulate Chinese ceramics in form and glazing.
