Berthe Morisot was one of the few women to participate in the Impressionists’ group exhibitions and is remembered today for her intimate depictions of the everyday lives of women in Paris and its exurbs during her time. In this drypoint, she depicts one of her favorite models, Jeanne-Marie Fourmanoir, reclining on a couch in the artist’s studio. Drypoint allowed for a precise line that allowed Morisot to focus on capturing details such as the curls of the artist’s hair and the detail of the swan carved into the chair upon which she reclines. Berthe Morisot only created eight etchings and only printed each in a few impressions during her lifetime.
