This drawing relates to Paul Delaroche’s interest in scenes from English history. Rejecting the lofty subjects promoted by the French Academy, including ancient history, mythology, and the bible, Delaroche appealed to popular taste with comparatively contemporary images. Here, a group of women in attire probably dating from around the 17th century gather around a fireplace within a lavishly decorated domestic setting. Although he was French, Delaroche became famous for painting scenes from English history.
