During the 1890s, when Édouard Vuillard made this print, his work focused on intimate domestic scenes. Here, the artist depicted the apartment that he shared with his mother and sister, who worked as seamstresses from home. Although the women are seen going about their daily activities, Vuillard used patterning and scale to suggest a subtle sense of unease and make the everyday seem unfamiliar. This print is one of several published by the prestigious art dealer Ambroise Vollard, who became a supporter of Édouard Vuillard's work during the 1890s.
