Statuette of Dionysos with an Animal

Dionysos stands with his left foot extended forward, and his head turned slightly to the right. He wears a chiton and himation, over which is draped an animal skin. His pose and stiff beard recall Archaic Greek art, and identify the work as Archaistic. He wears a full grapevine in his hair. The partially preserved body of a goat stands next to his left leg, one rear hoof on the ground, the other atop the extended foot of the god. The goat's forelegs embrace his leg at the knee. The goat's head is missing, except for the horns that are preserved in the god's left hand. Dionysos's right arm is missing below his right sleeve.
