Mirror with Relief-Decorated Cover

Covered mirror with relief decoration on the exterior of the cover. The scene is framed by palm fronds that rise from two small lion masks. A large acanthus separates the lion masks, and a garlanded bucranium separates the tops of the palm fronds. Within this frame a man and woman face one another. The man stands with his left foot set on a small outcrop of ground. He dangles a stout stick from his left hand. He gestures at his female companion with his right hand. He wears a short belted tunic. He is bearded and wears a pilos. The woman stands listening. She holds a spindle in her left hand. Her long chiton is pleated and belted. Her mantle hangs behind her. At her feet is a large dog with a collar. The scene represents the return of Ulysses to Ithaca, where Penelope meets him, but does not yet recognize him-- but the dog, Argos, does.
