Furniture became increasing specialized in France in the 1700s as craftsmen produced objects for use on specific occasions. Chairs came in a variety of shapes and sizes; patrons normally ordered elaborately carved pieces such as these armchairs in sets called *meubles*. In addition to groups of side chairs and armchairs, sets would include settees, firescreens, and folding screens, all with matching carving that was painted or gilded. The carving on these chairs is particularly intricate, with pierced cartouches and ribbing decorating the seats and top rails.
