This octagonal table rests on a central octagonal, baluster-shaped support inlaid with circles and octagons of black and white marble ( *nero antico* and *cipollina*) reminiscent of emblem shields. Though its form copies a modest wooden table, the beautiful and prized marbles and elegant inlay patterns on this table suggest that it was made for a wealthy and discerning patron. The table would have probably served to display a work of art or a decorative object in an Italian palace of around 1550.
