The prophet Saint John the Baptist, Jesus' cousin, wears a camel's hair shirt as a sign of his asceticism. A scroll above him reads: *Ecce Agnus Dei Q[ui] T[ollis] P[eccata] M[undi]* (Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world). John the Baptist is the first of more than twenty-five saints listed in the Suffrages, a section of prayers invoking the saints' aid.
