Candelabra such as these would have been placed on a mantelpiece, a commode, or a *secrétaire* in a salon of a Parisian townhouse.A drawing now in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris that illustrates a similar candelabra on a mantelpiece helped scholars attribute this piece to the bronze caster Pierre-Philippe Thomire. He frequently used these gilt floral garlands, rams' heads, and bronze griffins as decoration on his pieces.
