The illuminator of this large missal emphasized the human emotions of figures and set scenes in expansive, naturalistic landscapes set against burnished gold backgrounds. This treatment reflects the style of German panel painting around the year 1500. Many of the text pages in the manuscript display bold borders filled with foliate vines drawn on gold leaf. This manuscript is the winter portion of an elaborate missal, a type of manuscript containing all the spoken and sung texts used by the priest in the mass. The chants contained in this manuscript are accompanied by a specialized form of medieval German music notation called *Hufnagel* (horseshoe nail) because of the notation's resemblance to that shape.
