Hilde Hubbuch attended photography lectures at the Bauhaus, worked for a press bureau, and made photographs before emigrating to New York between 1933 and 1934. There she supported herself as a photographer specializing in family and children's portraits. Beginning in the late 1930s, she ran a yearly Christmas advertisement in *New Yorker* magazine, which assured her continued business.
