Obverse: Nude horseman astride galloping horse holding shield and two spears with left hand; he lances downwards to right with another spear held in his right hand; to right (?) letter. Below horse: ΣΑ [SA]. Reverse: Taras astride dolphin to left, holding distaff in left hand, right arm extended and below the arm, a pellet or dot; below dolphin, the prow of a ship. To right, above tail of dolphin, vertically: TΑΡΑΣ [TARAS]. Taras is both the name of the city that minted this coin and of a legendary figure who was saved from drowning by a dolphin sent by his father, the god Poseidon.
