The young haloed figure most likely depicts an angel, prominent auxiliary characters in religious scenes of all media during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This is one of two similar pieces owned by the museum ([Angel](http://www.getty.edu/art/collection/objects/220305/)). The densely patterned clothing, indicative of expensive fabric, is not unusual for such figures that were often represented in elaborate ecclesiastical or royal garments appropriate to their status as heavenly attendants.
