Saint John turns away in horror as the dragon, angered by the woman's escape, battles Christian warriors holding shields with crosses. As the text describes, the dragon "went to make war with the rest of the woman's seed, who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus." (Apocalypse 12:17) The dragon's heads face both left and right, a sign of its inescapable power. One of the dragon's heads sinks its teeth into a shield, and even the tail joins in the fray as the head on its end bites one warrior from behind.
