This large basin, which sits on a small, straight-sided foot, is undecorated except for two fluted handles, each encircled at the mid-point with a beaded band. Both handles are attached to the body of the vessel with appliques fashioned in the shape of palmettes. Wealthy Romans, such as those who owned luxurious homes on the Bay of Naples, used vessels like this for religious rituals and for handwashing during banquets.
