This leaf from a Christian choir book contains an initial *E* that represents Saint Peter grasping a set of enormous golden keys that hold the promise of entry to heaven. The text it introduces concerns the feast of Saint Syrus, who followed Saint Peter to Rome and served as the earliest bishop of Pavia in the first century. The artist, Lippo Vanni, was heavily influenced by the Sienese artist Pietro Lorenzetti. This influence can be seen in the direct frontal composition of the figure and the powerful facial features that are characterized by broad cheeks and deep-set eyes. The style is consistent with Vanni’s early work of around 1340.
