Originally from Illinois, Vroman worked for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company for sixteen years before moving to California in 1893. Upon opening a store that sold books, stationery, and photographic supplies in Pasadena--which remains in operation as "Vroman's Bookstore" today--he began to pursue his interest in photography. The "Pueblo" or town, encloses a quadrangular area within which are the ruins of a church built under the direction of the Jesuit missionaries. The houses are built one above the other to the height of five or six stories.
