On this dazzling canon table page, one of eight that open this Greek Gospel book, the anonymous illuminator supplied a golden architectural framework for the tables. Together with the gold writing, the glittering framework creates the effect of goldsmith's work. Canon tables indicate the harmony of the Gospels through columns of numbers recording the Gospel passages that relate the same story. On this page, the numbers in the outer pairs of columns refer to passages in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark , and the numbers in the middle two columns refer to passages that correspond in Matthew and Luke.
