This scene of drunken revelry depicts two fauns (half-human, half-goat creatures) and two nude female figures masterfully intertwined in dynamic poses. They are engaging in a bacchanal, an ancient Roman festival celebrating Bacchus, the god of wine. This plaster relief decorated the dining room mantelpiece in the Normandy home of Charles Auzoux (1836-1922), a collector and lawyer who helped Dalou and many other artists with his legal expertise.
