Paulina Being Fooled by Mundis in the Guise of Anubis

As though peering through a colonnade, the viewer can witness the multiple stages of Mundis’s deception of the Roman woman Paulina. A devotee of the Egyptian god Anubis, Paulina was the naïve victim of a wily trick enacted by bribed temple priests and a man who coveted her, Mundis. Told her prayers and sacrifices would be rewarded with a private visit from the god, Paulina waited by the shrine at night in a bed provided by the (unbeknownst to her) corrupt priests. Mundis then entered the room in the guise of Anubis and told Paulina that she would conceive his son. Paulina was elated, and did not realize she had been duped into committing adultery until the following day.
