Balancing his rigid body upside down on the top rung of a ladder, the unidentified circus performer in this photograph has captured the attention of the man leaning over the railing at lower right. Framed by the arched roof overhead and wearing street clothes, he appears to be practicing his routine for his audience of two: the leaning man and Andre Kertész. The camera captured the static quality of his gravity-defying pose.
